Colorado Estate Planning Attorney Kreig Mitchell has experience in a wide range of state and federal income, estate, excise, and sales and use tax planning and controversy issues.
Much of Kreig’s tax planning work has focused on the unique tax issues faced by technology and manufacturing companies, individuals and small business owners. He has also done tax planning for inheritors of wealth. Kreig’s tax planning work involved business acquisitions and dispositions, business formations and restructurings, employee benefits, business tax incentives, real estate, trust and estate planning, and other taxable transfers and transactions.
Kreig also has substantial experience with tax controversy and administrative work in various tax arenas. These matters have included audit, collection, and litigation matters. He has represented clients before the Internal Revenue Service, numerous state tax boards and administrative bodies, and the United States Tax Court.
This work has involved a wide range of substantive tax issues, including entitlement to various state and federal tax incentives, hobby losses, personal and business bad debts, and timing of stock options. Kreig has handled procedural tax issues including statutes of limitations; state and federal liens and levies; innocent spouse relief claims; collection due process and equivalent hearings; offers in compromise; and tax, penalty, and interest abatement claims.
Kreig has previously worked as a tax director for Axiom Solutions in Denver, Colorado, where he represented numerous technology and manufacturing companies in tax refund matters. He has also worked as a sole practitioner business and tax attorney in Boulder, Colorado, and as a financial planner for The Wealth Conservancy in Boulder, Colorado. While in school, Kreig served as an extern with the Internal Revenue Service Office of Chief Counsel and as a student attorney for a low income-taxpayer tax clinic. Prior to entering law school, Kreig served as an adult probation officer.
